Abstract: The effects of lignin on soybean seed quality have been studied since the early 1990s. Initially, higher lignin content in the seed coat was associated with greater resistance to mechanical damage by the seeds. Later, positive relationships of lignin content in the seed coat were associated with tolerance to stresses caused by weathering in pre-harvest, resulting in improved seed quality. Additional studies have shown that higher lignin content in the pod wall of soybean is also related to production of seeds with high physiological and sanitary qualities. Colored soybean seeds (black or brown) are known to have higher seed quality due to higher lignin content in the seed coat; in addition, the presence of anthocyanin in the seed coat of colored seeds also contributes to improve seed quality. Finally, the effects of boron on lignin synthesis are also highlighted in this review article. As demonstrated in this review article, lignin content in the seed coat and pod wall of soybean plays an important role in relation to physical, health, and physiological seed qualities. These parameters should be considered in studies related to evaluation of the quality of soybean seeds as affected by genetic factors. These parameters should also be strongly considered for inclusion in breeding programs to improve soybean seed and grain quality.

Resumo: Os efeitos da lignina na qualidade da semente de soja vêm sendo estudados desde os primeiros anos da década de 1990. Inicialmente, verificou-se que maiores teores de lignina no tegumento da semente estavam associados a maior resistência a danos mecânicos pelas sementes. Posteriormente, relações positivas do teor de lignina no tegumento das sementes foram associadas à tolerância aos estresses causados pelo intemperismo na fase de pré-colheita, resultando em melhor qualidade das sementes. Estudos adicionais mostraram que maiores teores de lignina na parede da vagem da soja também estão relacionados à produção de sementes com altas qualidades fisiológicas e sanitárias. Sementes de soja coloridas (pretas ou marrons) são conhecidas por possuírem sementes de maior qualidade devido ao maior teor de lignina no tegumento; além disso, a presença de antocianina nos tegumentos das sementes coloridas também contribui para a melhoria da qualidade das sementes. Finalmente, os efeitos do boro na síntese de lignina também são destacados neste artigo de revisão. Conforme demonstrado neste artigo de revisão, o teor de lignina no tegumento e na parede da vagem da soja desempenha um papel importante relacionado às qualidades físicas, sanitárias e fisiológicas das sementes. Esses parâmetros devem ser considerados em estudos relacionados à avaliação da qualidade de sementes de soja, afetadas por fatores genéticos, pois também devem ser fortemente considerados para serem incluídos em programas de melhoramento, para melhorar a qualidade de sementes e grãos de soja.

ABSTRACT The identification of pod- and seed-related traits of soybean genotypes and their interaction with water uptake can be applied in breeding programs with a view to establishing cultivars developed for the production and maintenance of high-quality seeds. The objective was to evaluate the water uptake of pods and seeds of soybean cultivars with different lignin contents after different soaking periods. The experimental was arranged in a completely randomized, 7×10 factorial design, with four replications. The factors consisted of seven soybean cultivars and 10 soaking periods (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 24, 48 hours). The pods and seeds were grown in a greenhouse and harvested at the phenological growth stage R8 (at full maturation, when 95% of the pods had mature color). The following traits were evaluated: lignin content in pod and seed coat, moisture content, and rate of water uptake of pods and seeds. Soybean cultivars with pods with high lignin contents have a lower rate of water uptake. The lignin contents of the seed coats, within the chosen limits, did not affect the seed water uptake.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar estruturalmente as vagens e os tegumentos de cultivares de soja (Glycine max), bem com determinar a qualidade das sementes quando submetidas à deterioração por umidade em pré-colheita. Utilizou-se arranjo fatorial 7×3 – sete cultivares e três volumes de precipitações pluviais simuladas (0, 54 e 162 mm). A exposição à chuva foi simulada no estádio fenológico R8. Em seguida, as plantas foram levadas à casa de vegetação, onde foram mantidas até a coleta das vagens e das sementes. Após a coleta, realizaram-se as seguintes avaliações: teste de tetrazólio, teor de lignina nas vagens e nos tegumentos, e análise estrutural de vagens (espessura do exocarpo, do mesocarpo e do endocarpo) e tegumentos (espessura da epiderme, da hipoderme e das células parenquimatosas). Precipitações de 54 e 162 mm em pré-colheita reduzem a qualidade das sementes de soja; entretanto, a resposta à deterioração por umidade difere de acordo com a cultivar. A tolerância a todas as precipitações pluviais simuladas foi maior para BRSMT Pintado, BRS Jiripoca e M8210IPRO e menor para BRS 1010IPRO. Vagens com maior espessura do exocarpo, do mesocarpo e do endocarpo e elevados teores de lignina apresentam maior tolerância à deterioração por umidade e sementes com maior vigor e viabilidade. A espessura da hipoderme da testa de tegumentos está relacionada à tolerância à deterioração por umidade e à obtenção de sementes de elevada qualidade.

Abstract The objective of this work was to analyze structurally the pods and seed coats of soybean (Glycine max) cultivars, as well as to determine the quality of seeds when subjected to deterioration by weathering in pre-harvest. A 7×3 factorial arrangement was used – seven cultivars and three volumes of simulated rainfall (0, 54, and 162 mm). Exposure to rainfall was simulated in the R8 phenological stage. Then, the plants were taken to a greenhouse, where they were kept until the time of collection of pods and seeds. After collection, the following evaluations were carried out: tetrazolium test, lignin content in pods and seed coats, and structural analysis of pods (exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp thickness) and seed coats (epidermis, hypodermis, and parenchymal-cell thickness). Pre-harvest rainfall of 54 and 162 mm reduces the quality of soybean seeds; however, the response to deterioration by weathering differs according to the cultivar. The tolerance to all simulated rainfall was greater for BRSMT Pintado, BRS Jiripoca, and M8210IPRO and lower for BRS 1010IPRO. Pods with a greater thickness of the exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp and a high lignin content show greater resistance to weathering deterioration and seeds with greater vigor and viability. The thickness of the hypodermis of the testa is related to resistance to weathering deterioration and to the obtainment of high-quality seeds.

Resumo: A técnica de análise de imagens multiespectrais para detecção da fluorescência de clorofila (FC) em sementes de soja foi estudada com o objetivo de avaliar a relação entre os sinais da FC e o seu potencial fisiológico. Para dois cultivares, BMX Desafio RR 8473 RSF e 96R10 IPRO, foram utilizados oito tratamentos correspondendo a 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%, 12% e 14% de sementes esverdeadas, os quais foram submetidos a diferentes testes de qualidade. Inicialmente, a FC das sementes foi determinada utilizando-se espectros de 660 nm e 730 nm e com as mesmas sementes foram realizados os testes de germinação, condutividade elétrica, envelhecimento acelerado com solução saturada de NaCl, tetrazólio e análise computadorizada de imagens de plântulas (Vigor-S). Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com as repetições de cada tratamento. Com o software R®, os dados dos testes de germinação, de vigor e de FC das sementes foram submetidos à análise de variância (ANOVA) e as médias agrupadas pelo teste de Skott-Knott (p ≤ 0,05). Os coeficientes de correlação linear de Pearson (r) foram calculados para todas as combinações entre as avaliações com significância dos valores r, determinados pelo teste t (p ≤ 0,05) e procedeu-se a análise multivariada de componentes principais. Aumentos proporcionais de sementes esverdeadas contribuem para o aumento nos sinais de fluorescências de clorofila e tem correlação negativa com a qualidade fisiológica das sementes, de modo que níveis acima de 4% de sementes esverdeadas nas amostras resultam em perdas acentuadas no potencial fisiológico. Portanto, a fluorescência de clorofila detectada por intermédio de imagens multiespectrais tem relação inversa com o potencial fisiológico de sementes de soja.

Abstract: The multispectral image analysis technique to detect chlorophyll fluorescence (CF) in soybean seeds was studied to assess the relationship between CF signals and seed physiological potential. Eight treatments, corresponding to 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%, 12%, and 14% green seeds, were used on two cultivars, BMX Desafio RR 8473 RSF and 96R10 IPRO, which passed through different seed quality tests. Initially, the CF of the seeds was determined using 660 nm and 730 nm spectra, and then the germination, electrical conductivity, accelerated aging with saturated NaCl solution, tetrazolium, and computerized seedling image analysis (Vigor-S) tests were performed on the same seeds. A completely randomized design was used, as well as replications of each treatment. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed on the data from germination, vigor, and CF tests using the R® software, and the means were grouped by the Scott-Knott test (p ≤ 0.05). Pearson’s linear correlation coefficients (r) were calculated for all combinations among the evaluations with significance of the r values determined by the t-test (p ≤ 0.05), and multivariate analysis of the principal components was performed. Proportional increases in green seeds contribute to an increase in chlorophyll fluorescence signals and have a negative correlation with seed physiological quality; levels above 4% green seeds in the samples result in marked losses in physiological potential. Therefore, the chlorophyll fluorescence detected through multispectral images is inversely related to the physiological potential of soybean seeds.

Resumo: O teste de envelhecimento acelerado é muito utilizado para avaliar o vigor de sementes de soja. Atualmente, a literatura recomenda a instalação do teste de germinação em, no máximo, uma hora após o processo do envelhecimento das sementes, o que dificulta a instalação e avaliação de grande número de amostras. Dessa maneira, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do atraso para a instalação do teste de germinação após o processo de envelhecimento acelerado de sementes de soja sobre o seu desempenho fisiológico. Foram utilizados três lotes de sementes das cultivares BRS 397, BRS 399 RR, BRS 1007 IPRO, BRS 1010 IPRO e BRS 388, todas dentro dos padrões exigidos para comercialização. Os lotes foram caracterizados fisiologicamente pela avaliação de suas sementes quanto ao grau de umidade, germinação, avaliação de vigor das plântulas, teste de tetrazólio (viabilidade e vigor) e teste de envelhecimento acelerado. Os tratamentos avaliados foram compostos por tempos (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 e 8 horas) de atraso para a instalação do teste de germinação, após as sementes terem sido submetidas ao teste de envelhecimento acelerado. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que o atraso por até oito horas para a instalação do teste de germinação, após o processo do envelhecimento acelerado de sementes de soja, não tem relação direta com o desempenho fisiológico dos lotes.

Abstract: The accelerated aging test is widely used to evaluate the vigor of soybean seeds. Currently, the methodology recommended in the literature is to set up the germination test at most one hour after the seed aging process, which makes it difficult to set up and evaluate a large number of samples. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of delay in setting up the germination test after the process of accelerated aging of soybean seeds, specifically its effect on seed physiological performance. We tested three seed lots of the soybean cultivars BRS 397, BRS 399 RR, BRS 1007 IPRO, BRS 1010 IPRO, and BRS 388, all within the standards required for commercialization. The seed lots were physiologically characterized by evaluation of moisture content, germination, seedling vigor classification, tetrazolium test (viability and vigor) and accelerated aging test. The treatments consisted of hours (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) of delay in setting up the germination test after accelerated aging. A delay of up to eight hours in setting up the germination test after the accelerated aging process of soybean seeds has no direct relationship with the result of assessment of the physiological performance of the seed lot.

Resumo: O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as alterações na qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja ao longo do período de armazenamento em dois ambientes e sua relação com metabólitos da rota dos fenilpropanóides. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 x 8 (períodos de armazenamento x cultivares), com quatro repetições. Foram utilizadas sementes de cultivares com características contrastantes de teor de lignina, cor e presença de antocianina no tegumento e teor de isoflavona na semente, armazenadas durante seis meses em câmara fria e seca e em ambiente não controlado. Periodicamente, a cada dois meses, as sementes foram avaliadas quanto à germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, emergência de plântulas e tetrazólio. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes é reduzida ao longo do armazenamento, com maiores taxas de decréscimo no ambiente não controlado. Os metabólitos da rota dos fenilpropanóides estudados, especialmente a lignina, interferem no potencial de armazenamento das sementes. Cultivares com maiores teores de lignina apresentam maior potencial de armazenamento, principalmente em ambiente não controlado.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the physiological quality of soybean seeds throughout a storage period in two environments, and to evaluate how these changes are related to metabolites of the phenylpropanoid pathway. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a 4 × 8 factorial arrangement (storage periods × cultivars) with four replications. We used seeds from cultivars with contrasts in lignin content, color, and presence of anthocyanin in the seed coat, and isoflavone content in the seed. The seeds were kept for six months under cold and dry storage and in a non-controlled environment. Germination, first germination count, seedling emergence, and tetrazolium testing were performed on the seeds every two months. The physiological quality of the seeds declines during the storage period, with higher rates of decrease in the non-controlled environment. The metabolites of the phenylpropanoid pathway that were studied, especially lignin, affect seed storage potential. Cultivars with higher lignin content show greater storage potential, especially in a non-controlled environment.

Resumo: O tratamento químico de sementes de soja é muito importante para assegurar o sucesso no estabelecimento da lavoura. Contudo, deve-se ter atenção a problemas, como a fitotoxicidade de combinações de produtos, capazes de reduzir o desempenho fisiológico. O uso de recursos computacionais para identificar efeitos fitotóxicos têm potencial para integrar às etapas do controle de qualidade de sementes tratadas. O objetivo foi verificar se a análise computadorizada de imagens de plântulas permite avaliar de forma eficiente e simplificada a fitotoxicidade do tratamento químico de sementes de soja. As sementes de dois lotes foram tratadas com fungicidas, inseticidas, micronutrientes e combinações entre eles, além de polímero e pó secante (recobrimentos). Após o tratamento químico, as sementes foram avaliadas quanto a germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, emergência de plântulas em areia, envelhecimento acelerado e o desempenho de plântulas com e sem a correção de regiões não demarcadas automaticamente (Vigor-S). Verificamos alta correlação dos parâmetros do Vigor-S com os testes tradicionais para detecção de efeitos fitotóxicos do tratamento químico, independente da correção feita no sistema. A análise computadorizada de imagens de plântulas é um recurso eficiente e de alta sensibilidade para avaliar a fitotoxicidade do tratamento químico de sementes de soja.

Abstract: Chemical treatment of soybean seeds is very important to ensure successful crop establishment. However, problems such as phytotoxicity of product combinations that can reduce seed physiological performance require attention. The use of computational resources has shown potential in identifying phytotoxic effects and contributing to the steps of quality control of treated seeds. The aim of this study was to determine if computerized image analysis of seedlings enables the phytotoxicity of chemical treatment of soybean seeds to be assessed in an effective and simplified manner. Samples from two soybean seed lots were treated with fungicides, insecticides, micronutrients, and their combinations, as well as with polymer and drying powder (coatings). After chemical treatment, the seeds were evaluated for germination, first germination count, seedling emergence in sand, accelerated aging, and seedling performance with and without the correction of regions not automatically demarcated (Vigor-S). We found high correlation of the Vigor-S parameters with the traditional tests for detection of phytotoxic effects of chemical treatment, regardless of correction made in the system. Computerized image analysis of seedlings is an effective and highly sensitive resource for evaluating possible phytotoxicity effects due to chemical treatment of soybean seeds.

Resumo: A ocorrência de danos mecânicos se constitui um problema sério para o potencial fisiológico de sementes de soja, principalmente quando combinado com tratamento químico. O objetivo do trabalho foi investigar os efeitos do tratamento químico sobre o potencial fisiológico de sementes de soja com níveis crescentes de danos mecânicos. Sementes de dois lotes (cv. M6410 IPRO), apresentando diferenças de vigor, foram submetidas a cinco níveis de danos mecânicos (zero, um, dois, três e quatro impactos) provocados de forma controlada. Após a caracterização do efeito dos impactos sobre a integridade física das sementes (raios X, microtomografia computadorizada de raios X, tetrazólio e hipoclorito de sódio), estas foram submetidas a quatro combinações de tratamento químico com fungicidas (carbendazim e thiram), inseticidas (imidaclopride e tiocarbe), micronutrientes (cobalto e molibdênio), polímero (Peridiam®) e pó secante (Talkum Gloss®). A germinação e o vigor das sementes foram avaliados sessenta dias após o tratamento químico. Constatou-se que aumento progressivo de danos mecânicos, especialmente aqueles que provocam fissuras no tegumento, proporciona redução no potencial fisiológico de sementes de soja e aumenta a sua sensibilidade ao efeito fitotóxico do tratamento químico. A integridade física do tegumento é determinante para o sucesso de tecnologias utilizadas para o tratamento químico de sementes.

Abstract: Mechanical damage is a serious problem for the physiological potential of soybean seeds, especially when combined with chemical treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chemical treatment on the physiological potential of soybean seeds with increasing levels of mechanical damage. Soybean seeds (cv. M6410 IPRO) of two lots with differences in vigor were subjected to five levels of mechanical damage (zero, one, two, three, and four impacts) brought about in a controlled manner. After characterization of the effect of the impacts on seed physical integrity (X-ray, X-ray microtomography, tetrazolium, and sodium hypochlorite), the seeds were subjected to four combinations of chemical treatment with fungicides (carbendazim and thiram), insecticides (imidacloprid and thiodicarb), micronutrients (cobalt and molybdenum), polymer (Peridiam®), and drying powder (Talkum Gloss®). Seed germination and vigor were evaluated sixty days after chemical treatment. A progressive increase in mechanical damage, especially that which causes cracks in the seed coat, reduces the physiological potential of soybean seeds and increases their sensitivity to the phytotoxic effect of the chemical treatment. The physical integrity of the seed coat is crucial for the success of technologies used for chemical seed treatment.

Resumo: A produção de sementes de alta qualidade está atrelada a um bom sistema de controle de qualidade. Nesse sistema, o teste de tetrazólio é um dos testes que se destaca para a avaliação da qualidade fisiológica das sementes, não apenas por sua relativa rapidez, mas também pela quantidade de informações que o teste pode apresentar, por meio dos índices de viabilidade e de vigor, além de propiciar o diagnóstico dos possíveis problemas de qualidade das sementes, como os danos mecânicos, danos causados por insetos e os de intempéries em pré-colheita e de deterioração durante a armazenagem. O desenvolvimento do teste teve seus primórdios no final do século 19, com grande evolução em seus conceitos e métodos no século 20. Para tanto, houve a dedicação de dezenas de profissionais em diversos países, como Alemanha, Japão, Rússia, Sérvia (antiga Iugoslávia), Estados Unidos, Argentina e Brasil. O teste mede, indiretamente, os processos de respiração que ocorrem nas mitocôndrias das células componentes dos tecidos das sementes. A reação de redução da solução do sal de tetrazólio sob a ação das enzimas desidrogenases resulta no trifenilformazan, que apresenta a coloração vermelho carmin e, por meio da interpretação dos padrões de coloração, são identificados os índices de viabilidade, de vigor e dos principais problemas que podem afetar a qualidade das sementes.

Abstract: The production of high quality seeds is linked to a good quality control system. In this system, the tetrazolium test plays an important role in the evaluation of the seed physiological quality, not only due to its relative quickness, but also because of the amount of information that the test presents, such as the indexes of viability and vigor, in addition to providing the diagnosis of possible seed quality problems, such as mechanical damage, insect damage, pre-harvest weathering and deterioration during storage. The development of the test had its beginnings at the end of the 19th century, with great evolution in its concepts and methods in the 20th century. For that, there was the dedication of dozens of professionals in several countries, such as Germany, Japan, Russia, Serbia (former Yugoslavia), United States, Argentina and Brazil. The test indirectly measures the respiration processes that occur in the mitochondria of the cells that make up the tissues of the seeds. The reducing reaction of the solution of the tetrazolium salt under the action of dehydrogenase enzymes results in triphenylformazan, which presents a red carmin coloration. By the interpretation of the resulting staining patterns, seed viability, vigor and the main problems affecting seed quality are determined.

Resumo: Para manter as qualidades física, fisiológica e sanitária das sementes de soja durante o armazenamento, deve-se considerar o controle eficiente de pragas. O expurgo é uma técnica usada para eliminar pragas que infestam sementes armazenadas, mas não há informações sobre possíveis efeitos fitotóxicos ou efeitos sobre os microrganismos nas sementes expurgadas várias vezes durante o armazenamento. Um experimento foi conduzido para verificar o efeito na germinação, viabilidade e vigor (tetrazólio, envelhecimento acelerado e testes de comprimento de plântulas) e na viabilidade dos microrganismos associados às sementes de soja. O estudo foi conduzido em sementes de soja que foram expostas a três expurgos com fosfina durante o período de 210 dias de armazenamento, em delineamento estatístico inteiramente casualizado. Os tratamentos foram três concentrações de fosfina (PH3) .m-3 a 1,0, 2,0 e 3,0 g.m-3 e o controle, sem aplicação de fosfina, aplicados três vezes nas mesmas sementes ao longo do período de armazenamento. As câmaras de expurgo foram feitas de lona plástica impermeável ao gás fosfina. O expurgo das sementes não modificou o desempenho fisiológico das sementes de soja. Também não afetou a viabilidade dos fungos e das bactérias presentes nas sementes.

Abstract: To maintain the physical, physiological and sanitary qualities of soybean seeds during storage, efficient control of pests must be considered. Fumigation is a technique used to eliminate pests that infest stored seeds, but there is no information on possible toxic effects on the seed and the microorganisms in the seeds fumigated several times during storage. An experiment was conducted to ascertain its effect on germination, viability, and vigor (tetrazolium, accelerated aging, and seedling length tests) and on the microorganisms associated with the soybean seeds. The study was conducted on soybean seeds which were exposed to three phosphine fumigations over the period of 210 days of storage in a completely randomized statistical design. The treatments were three concentrations of phosphine (PH3.m-3) at 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 g.m-3 and the control without application of phosphine, applied three times on the same group of the seeds throughout the storage period. The fumigation chambers were made of plastic sheet impermeable to phosphine gas. Seed fumigation did not modify the physiological performance of the soybean seeds. It also did not affect the viability of the fungi and bacteria in the seeds.

Resumo: O objetivo neste trabalho foi realizar o zoneamento agroclimático, visando identificar as regiões do estado de Mato Grosso com as melhores condições climáticas para a produção de sementes de soja com alta qualidade de cultivares precoces. Para a elaboração desse zoneamento, foram utilizados, inicialmente, dados mensais de temperatura média de 11 estações meteorológicas convencionais e 34 estações meteorológicas automáticas. Devido à baixa densidade de estações com dados de temperatura, esta variável foi estimada por meio de equações de regressão espacial, que tinham como variáveis preditoras a latitude, longitude e altitude. A definição das regiões de maior ou menor risco climático foi associada à ocorrência de temperaturas médias dos meses de janeiro e fevereiro. Foram definidas três classes: favorável (≤ 24 °C); medianamente favorável (24,1 a 25 °C) e pouco favorável (≥ 25,1 °C). Para elaboração, utilização dos mapas e compilação dos dados geográficos, procedeu-se a interpolação para espacialização, utilizando-se o método do inverso do quadrado da distância. Utilizou-se o sistema ArcGIS, por meio do qual foi confeccionado o mapa temático com as representações das melhores regiões para a produção de sementes de soja de cultivares precoces. A maior parte das regiões Sudeste e Oeste de Mato Grosso é classificada como favorável (temperatura média ≤ 24 °C) para a produção de sementes de soja com alta qualidade de cultivares precoces.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to carry out the agroclimatic zoning of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, in order to identify the regions with the best climatic conditions for producing seeds with high quality of early soybean cultivars. For this purpose, the average monthly temperature data from 11 conventional and 34 automated meteorological stations were used. Due to the low number of stations with data temperature available, this variable was estimated using spatial regression equations, having latitude, longitude and altitude as input variables. Regions with high or low climatic risk were defined according to the average temperatures observed in January and February. The following three categories were established: favorable (≤ 24 °C); moderately favorable (24.1 to 25 °C) and slightly favorable (≥ 25.1 °C). For the material confection, map usage, and geographical data compilation, the inverse distance squared weighted interpolation method was applied. The ArcGIS system was employed to compose the thematic map, in which the best areas for producing seeds of early soybean cultivar were marked. Most of the Southeastern, and Western regions of Mato Grosso were considered to be favorable for producing high quality seeds of early soybean cultivars (average temperature ≤ 24 °C).

Resumo: O beneficiamento de sementes tem uma importância fundamental na melhoria da qualidade de lotes de sementes de soja, podendo melhorar as caracacterísticas físicas pela eliminação de materiais inertes, sementes de plantas daninhas e sementes fora de padrão e permitindo incremento na qualidade fisiológica. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a evolução das características físicas e fisiológicas das sementes de soja ao longo da linha de beneficiamento, sendo avaliadas seis cultivares em quinze pontos de amostragem. Delineou-se em DIC, em fatorial 15 x 6 e 10 repetições. Avaliou-se germinação; vigor no envelhecimento acelerado; viabilidade pelo teste de tetrazólio (TZ classes 1 a 5); vigor (TZ classes 1 a 3); deterioração por umidade (TZ classe 3); danos mecânicos totais (TZ classes 2 a 8); danos por percevejos (TZ classes 2 a 8); e grau de umidade. Concluiu-se que o beneficiamento melhora as qualidades física e fisiológica das sementes, sendo a eficiência acentuada nas sementes de qualidade mediana. O sistema de transporte (elevadores e correias transportadoras) não promoveu danos mecânicos às sementes. As sementes maiores tendem a ser mais afetadas pelos danos mecânicos, e menores apresentam mais danos por percevejos. As sementes deterioradas por umidade não são eliminadas em nenhuma etapa do beneficiamento.

Abstract: Seed processing or conditioning is important for improving soybean seed lot quality as it improves the physical characteristics by eliminating inert materials, weed and non-standard seeds and increases physiological quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of processing on physical and physiological qualities of soybean seed, before and after each equipment and transport system, during processing in a Seed Processing Plant. Samples of six cultivars were obtained during processing while seeds passed through each machine, totaling fifteen sampling sites. The experimental design was entirely randomized, treatments arranged in 15 x 6 factorial scheme, with 10 replications. Characteristics evaluated were germination; vigor by accelerated aging test; tetrazolium test for viability (TZ 1 to 5), vigor (TZ 1 to 3), weathering damage (TZ 3), mechanical damages (TZ 2 to 8), stinkbug damages (TZ 2 to 8) and moisture content. Results showed that processing improves the physiological and physical qualities of soybean seeds and enhances average quality seeds. The equipment and the system of transport (lifts and conveyor belts) used in this study did not cause mechanical damages to the seeds; the mechanical damages were mostly detected in larger seeds and stinkbug damages were found in smaller seeds; and seeds with weathering damage were neither eliminated nor reduced by any processing line.

Resumo: O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes volumes de calda, via tratamento industrial, sobre a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja com diferentes níveis de vigor. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2x5, com quatro repetições. Os fatores foram constituídos por sementes com dois níveis de vigor (alto e baixo) e cinco volumes de calda (0, 600, 1200, 1800 e 2400 mL. 100kg-1). Os produtos utilizados para a obtenção dos volumes foram: fungicida (carbendazin + thiram); inseticida (imidacloprido + tiodicarbe); nematicida (abamectina); micronutriente (cobalto, molibdênio e zinco); polímero (peridiam); bioestimulante (cinetina + ácido giberélico) e inoculante (Bradyrhizobium japonicum). As cultivares utilizadas foram BRS 360 RR e BRS 1010 IPRO. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi determinada pelas seguintes avaliações: germinação, primeira contagem do teste de germinação, emergência de plântulas em areia, índice de velocidade de emergência, comprimento total, de parte aérea e raiz de plântulas. Nos diferentes volumes de calda, as sementes de soja de alto vigor apresentam maior qualidade fisiológica em relação às sementes de baixo vigor. O aumento do volume de calda no tratamento de sementes reduz a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja de baixo vigor.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different spray volumes, via industrial treatment, on the physiological quality of soybean seeds with different levels of vigor. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2x5 factor scheme, with four replications. Factors consisted in two levels of seed vigor (high and low) and five spray volumes (0, 600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 mL. 100 kg-1). Products used to obtain the volumes were: fungicide (carbendazin + thiram); insecticide (imidacloprid + thiodicarb); nematicide (abamectin); micronutrients (cobalt, molybdenum and zinc); polymer (peridiam); biostimulants (kinetin + gibberellic acid) and inoculum (Bradyrhizobium japonicum). The used cultivars were BRS 360 RR and BRS 1010 IPRO. The physiological seed quality was determined by the following evaluations: germination, first count of the germination test, seedling emergence in sand, emergency speed index, total length of shoot and root of the seedlings. In the different spray volumes, high vigor soybean seeds have higher physiological quality than low vigor seeds. The increased spray volumes in seed treatments reduce the physiological quality of low vigor soybean seeds.

Resumo: O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito do tratamento de sementes de soja antecipado e em pré-semeadura com diferentes combinações de produtos químicos, sobre o estabelecimento de plantas e desempenho produtivo da cultura. O delineamento foi de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2x7, sendo, duas épocas de tratamento de sementes e sete tratamentos (seis tratamentos químicos e uma testemunha sem tratamento). Os tratamentos foram: 1) fipronil + piraclostrobina + tiofanato metílico; 2) imidacloprido + tiodicarbe + carbendazin + thiram; 3) abamectina + tiametoxan + fludioxonil + mefenoxam + thiabendazole; 4) carbendazin + thiram; 5) fludioxonil + mefenoxam + thiabendazole; 6) carboxin + thiram; e 7) testemunha sem tratamento (somente água). As avaliações foram: emergência de plântulas, estande final, altura de plantas e inserção da primeira vagem, número de vagens por planta, sementes por vagens e por planta, massa de mil sementes e produtividade de grãos. O tratamento de sementes de soja antecipado (240 dias antes da semeadura) prejudica o estabelecimento da cultura, a massa de mil sementes e a produtividade de grãos, em relação ao tratamento em pré-semeadura. Os tratamentos químicos testados contendo fungicidas e inseticidas associados favorecem o estabelecimento da cultura, porém não alteram o desempenho produtivo da soja.

Abstract: The objective was to assess the early treatment effect of soybean seeds and pre-sowing with different combinations of chemicals on the establishment of plants and crop yield performance. The design was in randomized blocks in a 2x7 factorial arrangement, with two times for seed treatment and seven treatments (six chemical treatments and an untreated control). The treatments were: 1) fipronil + pyraclostrobin + thiophanate methyl; 2) imidacloprid + thiodicarb + carbendazin + thiram; 3) abamectin + thiamethoxam + fludioxonil + mefenoxam + thiabendazole; 4) carbendazin + thiram; 5) fludioxonil + mefenoxam + thiabendazole; 6) carboxin + thiram; and 7) untreated control (water only). The assessments were: seedling emergence, final stand, plant height and insertion of first pod, number of pods per plant, seeds per pod and per plant, thousand-seed weight and grain yield. Early treatment of soybean seeds (240 days prior to sowing) hinders the establishment of the crop, the thousand-seed weight and grain yield in relation to the pre-sowing treatment. Chemical treatments tested containing fungicides and insecticides associated favor the establishment of the crop, but do not alter the soybean yield performance.

O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi avaliar o uso da técnica de PCR (Polimerase Chain Reaction) na caracterização de cultivares de soja. O estudo foi realizado no Departamento de Produção Vegetal da Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas / UNESP e do Instituto de Biociências de Botucatu-SP. Foram utilizadas quatorze cultivares de soja comerciais, das quais seis foram selecionadas como reação positiva à peroxidase (BRS 320, BRS 284, BRS 232, BRS 7860RR, BRSMG 760SRR, BRS295RR), quatro como reação negativa (BRS 326, BRS 8160RR, BRSMG 800A (NutriSoy), BRS Valiosa RR) e quatro como reação positiva e negativa (BRS 8060, BRS 270RR, FTS Campo Mourão e BRS 239). Assim, as 14 cultivares foram submetidas ao ensaio bioquímico colorimétrico tradicional e os resultados obtidos foram comparados com o ensaio de PCR convencional. Para a análise de PCR, o DNA foi extraído de sementes inteiras, sendo que os primers foram testados por PCR e visualizados por eletroforese em gel de agarose. A combinação dos primers prx9 + prx10 confirmou a utilização da reação de PCR para caracterizar as cultivares de soja considerada duvidosa por teste convencional colorimétrico.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of the molecular biology technique of PCR (Polimerase Chain Reaction) in the characterization of soybean cultivars. The study was performed at the Department of Plant Production, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences/ UNESP and Institute of Bioscience, Botucatu-SP. Fourteen commercial soybean cultivars were used, of which six were selected as positive reaction to peroxidase (BRS 320, BRS 284, BRS 232, BRS 7860RR, BRSMG 760SRR, BRS295RR), four as negative reaction (BRS 326, BRS 8160RR, BRSMG 800A (NutriSoy), BRS Valiosa RR) and four as double reaction (BRSGO 8060, BRS 270RR, FTS Campo Mourão and BRS 239). Thus, the results attained by the traditional biochemical colorimetric test for the 14 cultivars were compared with the conventional PCR assay. For PCR analysis, DNA was extracted from whole seeds and the primers were tested, and subsequently PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis were performed. The combination of primers prx9 + prx10 confirmed the use of the PCR reaction to characterize soybean cultivars considered doubtful by conventional colorimetric text.
